About
Windrose is an open-world pirate survival adventure developed by Windrose Crew, released into Steam Early Access in the first half of 2026. Formerly known as Crosswind, the game underwent a major rebranding in late 2025, shifting from a free-to-play MMO model to a buy-to-play cooperative PvE experience. Set in an alternative 18th-century "Age of Piracy," the gameplay seamlessly blends naval combat, island exploration, and "soulslite" melee and ranged combat against both human empires and supernatural dark powers.
The core loop focuses on the "build, craft, survive" formula within a procedural archipelago. Players can captain a variety of vessels, ranging from nimble cutters and brigs to massive galleons, featuring manual sailing mechanics and tactical cannon fire. Transitions between ship-to-ship boarding actions and land-based exploration are seamless, allowing players to bombard coastal forts before storming them on foot. On land, the game features over 100 hand-crafted dungeons and diverse biomes where players gather resources to expand their personal outposts and recruit NPC deckhands to automate production.
As of February 2026, Windrose is featured in Steam Next Fest with a 4-to-6-hour demo that covers the first major biome and three islands. The current build supports self-hosted co-op for up to four players, while the full Early Access launch later in 2026 is slated to introduce dedicated servers and vastly expanded biomes like the volcanic Ashlands. Technical requirements are significant, utilizing DirectX 12 and optimized for high-end PC hardware to manage the game’s realistic water physics and dynamic weather systems.
