Following its 1.0 release in early 2024, the game received a major milestone update in January 2025 that introduced buildable rafts—including a fully furnishable houseboat—and a procedural wall system that allows players to blueprint defensive perimeters for the companion Kelvin to construct.
The narrative experience has been finalized with expanded story paths featuring Timmy, voiced by Shawn Ashmore, and a multi-ending conclusion that integrates a mysterious Golden Artifact. In the 2026 meta-game, this artifact serves as an endgame utility, allowing survivors to activate unique area-of-effect defenses against high-tier mutants. The AI systems for companions Kelvin and Virginia have been refined to include specialized maintenance commands, such as repairing structures and sharpening defensive spikes automatically.
Despite the 1.0 milestone and the announcement of a sci-fi-themed Forest 3 at The Game Awards 2025, Sons of the Forest remains a PC-exclusive title as of early 2026. While the developer, Endnight Games, has expressed interest in console ports, no official release dates for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S have been confirmed.
